The story begins in the casino as Bond builds up his funds before the showdown with Le Chiffre, also taking time to observe the target. The head of MI6, M, sends Bond to French casino Royale-les-Eaux to stop Le Chiffre from paying a debt to the terrorist organization SMERSH.
After he achieves his second kill in the field, James Bond is awarded Double O status. Casino Royale, an action thriller, takes place around the same time period as it was written, summer in the mid-1900's.
